Lesson Info
ISR swim instruction is for children 6 months to 6 years with all one-on-one instruction.
Lessons are conducted 5 days a week (Monday through Friday), at a maximum of 10 minutes a day, for approximately 6 weeks. Each child has their own lesson time daily.
Once a child is confident in their skills, we do clothing lessons to gently simulate an accidental submersion. Parent lessons are offered in the last week to teach you how to reinforce your child’s skills and protect your investment in ISR.

Infants to Early Walkers
The rollback to float program teaches your baby to independently turn themselves onto their back if ever face down in the water to safely breathe, rest, and float on their back until help arrives.
Established Walkers
The Swim-Float-Swim sequence teaches your child to swim underwater until they need to breathe, roll to their back for a few breaths until rested, then flip over to swim again.
(Some early walkers may end up achieving Swim-Float-Stay as skills are developmentally dependent.)
Big Kids
We teach children up to 6 years of age the Swim-Float-Swim sequence. At this age, we are able to get them to repeat the sequence so that they can swim farther to reach safety.
Once a Big Kid has mastered Self-Rescue, stroke lessons are available.
Maintenance and Refresher Lessons
Keep Your Child’s Self-Rescue Skills Sharp and Ready
At ISR Reno-Tahoe, we believe that water safety is a lifelong commitment. After completing the Self-Rescue series, it’s essential to continue reinforcing your child’s skills. Both maintenance and refresher lessons provide ongoing support to ensure that your child remains prepared for any water emergency as they grow and develop.
ISR Lessons Are Not "Done" After Self-Rescue
Many parents mistakenly believe that once their child completes the Self-Rescue lessons, the process is finished. However, water safety requires continued practice. As your child grows, their body and abilities change, which means their skills need to evolve too. That’s where maintenance and refresher lessons come in — they’re critical to ensuring your child remains ready for any water situation.
Maintenance Lessons: Ongoing Skill Reinforcement
Maintenance lessons are one-off lessons available on a drop-in basis, designed to keep your child’s skills sharp and up-to-date. After completing the Self-Rescue series, your instructor will recommend a frequency of maintenance lessons based on your child’s individual needs and skill level.
What’s Included in Maintenance Lessons?
Skill Reinforcement: Practice the Swim-Float-Swim sequence and other survival techniques to keep them fresh and effective.
Flexible Scheduling: These lessons can be taken at your convenience, as needed to keep your child’s skills intact.
Focused Attention: Each lesson is 1:1, ensuring personalized instruction to maintain your child’s water safety abilities.
Maintenance lessons are a great way to ensure that your child doesn’t lose their Self-Rescue skills as they grow, and they’re tailored to keep your child ready for any water emergency.
Refresher Lessons: Building Endurance, Skills and Confidence
Refresher lessons are short-term, intensive sessions designed to reinforce skills and build endurance. These are typically 2-3 week sessions with daily 1:1 lessons, Monday through Friday, for 10 minutes each day. During refresher lessons, your child will:
Practice Self-Rescue Skills: Continue working on their Swim-Float-Swim sequence and fine-tune their techniques.
Build Endurance: These lessons are perfect for improving your child’s stamina and strength, helping them swim for longer periods.
Skill Building: Your instructor will continue to introduce new skills to build on their existing skill set.
Strengthen Water Confidence: Regular practice gives your child the confidence to stay calm and self-reliant in water situations.
Refresher lessons are ideal for children who have already completed their Self-Rescue skills but need to strengthen their abilities and improve endurance as they grow. These sessions are a great option for families who haven’t been able to fit in maintenance lessons for a month or more. Refresher lessons provide an opportunity to re-establish and reinforce critical skills, helping your child remain as safe as possible in the water. These sessions are also perfect for improving endurance and building confidence, ensuring your child is always ready for any water situation.
Why Are Maintenance & Refresher Lessons Important?
Ongoing Skill Development: As your child grows, their physical and mental development may change, so maintaining their Self-Rescue skills is essential.
Building Confidence & Stamina: Both maintenance and refresher lessons give your child the opportunity to practice in a controlled, consistent way, improving their confidence in the water. Like any physical activity, practice is crucial to maintaining skills and improve muscle memory.
Critical for Growing Bodies: As children get older, their bodies change, and they may need to adapt their Self-Rescue techniques. These lessons are designed to ensure that your child’s skills grow with them.
Peace of Mind: Knowing your child’s water safety skills are always up to date means you can enjoy peace of mind when they’re around water.
How Often Should My Child Take Maintenance or Refresher Lessons?
The frequency of maintenance and refresher lessons depends on your child’s age, skill level, and how frequently they’re around water. Typically:
Maintenance lessons: Recommended on a drop-in basis of 1-4 times per month, depending on the child’s need for skill reinforcement.
Refresher lessons: These skill building lessons are best taken seasonally or every 3-6 months to build endurance and ensure continued growth.
